Phonics this week (and a bit of maths!)

Phonics this week (and a bit of maths!)

We have been exploring five and ten frames in our maths lessons this week. They are such a clear, visual way to help us understand what numbers can ‘look like’.

Today we worked with a partner on a challenge to sort different arrangements of numbers on ten frames. Amazing teamwork, Chalkhill!

In phonics we learned 3 new digraphs and a trigraph – have a look at the graphemes below and click on the link to watch or join in a practice lesson.

The Mitten 🐰🦊🐻🐭❄️

The Mitten 🐰🦊🐻🐭❄️

We have loved sharing a book called The Mitten this week, a wintery story based on an old Ukranian folk tale.

We made story maps to help retell the story and discussed the order the animals squeezed into the mitten. It was a great opportunity to practise our ordinal numbers (first, second, third, last) as well!

Welcome back and phonics this week

Welcome back and phonics this week

We hope you have all had a restful and happy Christmas and New Year!

We’re very excited about our learning this term, starting with a focus on Winter and some wonderful stories that link to this topic.

This week in phonics we learned 3 new digraphs plus our first trigraph (3 letters that make 1 sound!) Can you spot it below?

Last week

Last week

Just a heads up that we have slightly different teacher days this week:

Remember to wear Christmas jumpers on Wednesday (donations for Save the Children warmly welcomed) and on Friday we plan to watch a festive film or show with popcorn as an end of term treat! 🎅🏻🍿

Shhh! ✨🎁

Shhh! ✨🎁

This morning we had an exciting visit to the Secret Shop – a magical place with a team of amazing Christmas elves waiting to help us find our gifts!

Later on we heard the Legend of the Christmas Spider, a folk tale from Ukraine. Lots of us were inspired to make spiders afterwards – we were careful to make sure we gave them 8 legs (our number of the week!)🕷️

We enjoyed another story about ‘eight’ this week – the very funny rhyming book ‘Octopus Socktopus’.

Stay and Play (and phonics this week)

Stay and Play (and phonics this week)

We look forward to seeing you on Monday morning for our next Stay and Play. The focus will be on maths and number learning.

This weeks’ new sounds are z, qu and ch – apologies again for the confusion with the phoneme books and order of learning – we will be doing sh and th next week! We have sent home the first set of tricky words in book bags today along with suggestions for games and activities to help practise with your child.
